From the Commodore
Welcome to the Barrington Yacht Club website. I hope members will find this site helpful in staying up to date about goings on around the Club, and for planning their participation in Club activities. Visitors and prospective members will, I hope, find useful information about visiting and/or joining BYC. (from homepage…)
The 2011 season is the 104th for BYC, and we are very proud of our long and rich history in yachting. More information about our history can be found on this site, and/or by speaking with our Club Historians, Jean and John MacIntyre: they are both a wealth of information.
The Club is open all year long. Social activities in the winter center around “TGIF”, with dinner and cocktails each Friday evening. Racing activities begin in March with the Spring Season for the Frostbiting Fleet (racing Sunfish on Sundays in the Winter annually since 1966) in March and April (The Fall Season is Sundays in November and December.). Shortly thereafter, the Barrington High School Sailing Team will start their season with practices and home meets at BYC. Launch service to moorings in the Barrington and Warren Rivers begins May 1, with the official opening for the Club on Saturday, May 7, 2011.
After the Opening, the pace of activities increases rapidly! Please find details elsewhere on this site. Highlights include:
- The Race Committee’s annual activities include, but are far from limited to, the Gladding Race around Prudence Island in May, The Cox Series on Tuesday nights from mid-May to the end of August, the Senior Circuit with adult members racing 420’s, Sunfish and Lasers on Thursday evenings June to August, and the Bud Humphrey Race around Prudence Island in September. Also, in 2011 BYC will continue its long tradition with the Sunfish class by hosting the fleet’s North American Championship Regatta in July.
- The Cruise Committee has annual cruises scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, the week of July 4, Labor Day weekend, and Columbus Day weekend, with informal/impromptu gatherings at Potter’s Cove or elsewhere at other times.
- The Sail Training Program begins instruction for our junior members shortly after school lets out in June and continues for the remainder of the summer. They also supervise the Junior Racing Series, “Mugwumps”, on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. STP has trained many sailors over the years, producing not only countless enthusiastic recreational sailors but also Olympians, World Champions and America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race skippers. The Women Teaching Women program is active throughout the year with sailing instruction, fun activities, and the Ole Ladies Cup Race.
- The Junior Activities Committee oversees the Junior Member area in and around the Dana Rice Building and our pool, as well as fun outings on Thursday evenings in the summer. All in all, they provide a great place to hang out and great activities for our Junior Members when they aren’t out on the water.
- The Social Committee oversees major Social events during the summer, as well as numerous regular activities during the “off-season”. “TGIF” continues from May to October: in addition to food available for purchase, the grills are open to allow members and their guests to prepare their own food.
Most of all, BYC is always a great place to relax, enjoy times with friends, or use as a base for activities on the water. We also have the best sunsets in Rhode Island!
See you at the Club,
