From the Commodore

It’s the year 2021 and the Barrington Yacht Club celebrates its 114th summer season.

Located at the southern tip of Tyler Point, this well-protected harbor in the northeast corner of Narragansett Bay affords the Club an excellent setting to initiate the multitude of activities provided for its members while remaining focused on the Club’s mission of fostering the sport of yachting.

Barrington Yacht Club revolves around its members, their love and respect for the water, for sailing and boating with all of the possibilities presented and the camaraderie that comes from this mutual sharing. Club activities are geared toward children, families and adults of all ages and include social events, sail training and sailboat racing for juniors and adults, cruising and hosting and supporting sailing regattas at home and away.

The cruising season starts on Memorial Day weekend, and continues with a summer cruise that spans either the Fourth of July holiday or an August get-away, followed by the Fleet Captain Cruise on Labor Day weekend and finishes on Columbus Day weekend with a short cruise inside Narragansett Bay.

Each summer, the Club Sail Training Program teaches well over 250 junior members the fundamentals of sailing, seamanship, on-water safety and sportsmanship. In classes for ages 5-18, starting with beginning students sailing in the Optimist ‘Green Fleet’ and continuing through our traveling race teams in Optis and 420s, there is a strong emphasis on both learning and having fun. On the adult side, there is a very well attended Women Teaching Women program that brings experts to the Club to present on subjects such as racing rules, boat preparation, tactics and preparation of offshore racing, passage making, sail and power boat handling and much more.

The Club is well known for its active racing calendar and this year promises to be no exception. During the summer, we host many events, including the Pret Gladding race in May, the weekly Cox Series on Tuesday evenings, the Junior racing series known as Mugwumps on Wednesday nights, Thursday’s Adult Series, the traditional season ending Bud Humphrey Race plus fall and spring frostbiting. Our members regularly participate in other Narragansett Bay events, including the Swanson Cup, the Leukemia Cup Regatta, the Ida Lewis Distance Race, and periodic offshore races including the Newport-Bermuda Race and Marion to Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race.

Not all of the fun that takes place at the Club is on the water. The energetic and imaginative Social Committee organizes a large number of events throughout the year, as does the Junior Activities Committee, albeit with a focus on a younger constituent group. Starting with the Blizzard Brunch, an event held every year since 1978, to commemorate the famous blizzard of ‘78, through the Holiday Party in December, the Club is the site of a wonderful series of social functions.

Also, none of these activities would be possible without the key focus by our House Committee and dedicated professional staff in the maintaining of the Club grounds, the sailing fleet and the facilities.

With the involvement of our membership, BYC is able to flourish by combining the Traditions of the past with an emphasis on the current, making this a truly wonderful place to be.

The expectation is that 2021 will be a wonderful rebounding year!!!
